The power of listening

communication

During my usual LSBS Commute to work, I spoke at length with my friend T.

I realized I had a superpower and it became obvious how and when I attained this power.

A lot of people lack the ability to communicate their feelings because they are not ready for feedback on what is communicated.

Before I delve further, let me define communication for those who may be confused.

communication, n. The imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing or using some other medium. …The successful conveying or sharing of ideas and feelings.

Oxford English Dictionary

keywords from that definition: successful, sharing, ideas, and feelings.

I have always wanted to be heard in a conversation, or chip in a couple of things to ensure I sound smart, or when the conversation becomes bigger I get referenced for what I said.

But, in my opinion, that's total bull crap. I started out by just listening to people and I mean properly listening and personally placing myself in their shoes and replaying everything all over again to understand where they are coming from, I also replay it from my view to get how I would react to this information.

I end up comparing both scenarios and responding based on the best middle ground generated from these two views.

Social media has a lot of hate going around and I feel there is a gap in communication that breeds these feelings in people.

These gaps can be closed if people listen deeper and create multiple scenarios before acting on the first scenario that comes to mind.

Place yourself in the speakers’ position, and you as a responder might sometimes decide on the best response rather than just spewing what comes to you, even computers process information before giving back data.

If a computer can take its time to do that then what is stopping you?

In conclusion, when communicating with others ensure it is successfully conveyed, and both feelings are considered.

To the recipient of that information, be calm to process and understand the feelings behind the message being passed unto you.

Let’s all do better to close these communication gaps, and build a better society where we understand each other.
